What is best? The Potty Chair or the Potty Seat?

I want to thank all the comments and questions that you have done since the last post “What can I play with my son to help him leaving the dipper?”

I think living the dipper is not an easy task; it might depend on so many things… I recommend being patient and more else try to have fun during the process.

In the last post “What can I play with my son to help him living the dipper?” I talk about signs you should observe in your toddler behavior to check if he or she is ready to leave the diaper. It is very important not to begin if you are not sure about it.

If you are sure that the right moment has come, I recommend starting the process when the two parts, parents and children, are in their best shape.

As parents make sure not to start if you are under a big stress caused by things like work, divorce or a moving.
For the children try not to start if they are about to begin kindergarten, if they just had a new brother or if someone close jut past away.

Remember, if you are not ready, it is always better to wait a little beat more! Do you remember when you were little and before an exam you desperately needed to go to the toilet… Well the same happen to your kids; when they are under stress they produce more urine and they need to go to the toilet
more often.

What is best? The Potty Chair or the Potty Seat?

At first I recommend the potty chair (at floor level). It is very important for both feet to reach the floor so the kids can stand or sit whenever they want. By doing this we will be able to motivate their independence. Later on you can use either the urinal or the potty seat (WC adapter).

Be aware that in some cases the children can refuse to use the potty seat because they might be afraid to fell down.

If you have try to sit them since the beginning in the potty seat and it has turned oK, Great! Keep doing it! Just remember, put next to him a safe step so he/she can stand up or sit down whenever they want.

Explain toy your child what is a potty and for what do we us it.

I like to use the book ¿Quien ha visto mi urinal? By Mij Kelly y Mary McQuillan.

The book talks about a small girl named Maribel who uses a potty every day to go to the bathroom, but one day a caw stole it and took it to his farm.

All the animals of the farm got together to find out what was that new and strange thing for.

Maribel wanted to go to the bathroom but she couldn’t find it, so she asked the cow, the horse, the sheep, and all the farm animals if they have seen her potty, but they lie and when they saw that Maribel couldn´t resist any more they gave it back so she could go the bathroom.

After you read the book to your kid, go to the store and buy a potty then leave him to choose the one he likes.
If you feel like, you can read the book again so he can associate the reading with the new potty.

Play with the potty by personalizing it with stickers … For sure you will have fun!

After buying the potty take it to the bathroom and tell your toddler that this will be their new special chair.
Some specialists say you can put the potty in any room of the house. I do not agree with this statement… Do we sleep in the kitchen? No. Do we cook in the kitchen? No, we don´t! I recommend putting the potty in the bathroom. Little by Little they will associate the potty with going to pi. They will also learn to associate the time that takes to go to the bathroom.

Another thing you can play with your children is to take some toys  as if they were going to go to the toilette”, “just exactly as mom and dad does” .

Remember to have fun with your children in this new changing period.

To the “Big girl” C. with her mom N. for letting me use their pictures for the post. I miss you.

A.P. y F for borrow us Y. for the weekend.

Inma: Genial. Cualquier cosa, me preguntas.
